General Description:

Acanthastrea echinata, commonly known as Purple Rain Acanthastrea, features a vibrant purple and bright orange base with neon green and yellow growth rims, developing a unique and striking color combination as it grows into a colony.

Demands and Hardiness:

Acanthastrea echinata does not have specific care requirements but possesses strong stings, necessitating ample space within the aquascape to prevent damage. Acanthastrea in general are low-maintenance corals but require feeding for long-term health due to their medium to large pellet and prey size preference. They are exceptionally responsive to food, displaying feeding tentacles even during the daytime, indicating good health.

Lighting:

These corals can thrive under various lighting conditions, ranging from low to medium-high levels. Exposure to different light intensities can lead to dramatic color changes, though this does not impact the coral's health, only altering its appearance.

Water Flow:

It is advisable to maintain Acanthastrea echinata in areas with low to moderate water flow within the reef display. High flow rates may cause stress and hinder the coral's full extension, limiting feeding opportunities crucial for their well-being.

Feeding:

Acanthastrea corals benefit from a diet comprising Mysis, Krill, medium to large pellets, and other suitable frozen fish foods. A varied mix of meaty options like shrimp, fish, and squid, supplemented with vitamins and essential fatty acids, supports their nutritional needs and overall vitality.

Propagation:

Successful fragmentation methods have been employed for the propagation of Acanthastrea corals, ensuring their sustainable growth. While the specific coral in the propagation video is a Micromussa lord, similar care practices can be applied to Acanthastrea echinata.

Localization & Habitat:

Acanthastrea species are naturally found around the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including areas like Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, with specimens typically originating from Australia.
