Care DescriptionAcropora are the crown jewel of the SPS world.  No other genus has the sheer number of species as Acropora and when reef aquarists talk about the requirements to keep an SPS system, they are talking specifically about the care requirements of Acropora.  Having said that, Acropora are one of the most difficult corals to keep.  They are highly sensitive to changes in water chemistry and require the most in terms of flow and light.  Many experienced hobbyists have struggled keeping Acropora long term, but that is part of the attraction to this coral.  Lastly, Acropora benefit greatly from a well established aquarium, preferably one that has been set up at least for 1 year. Please see below for additional care tips for Acropora.

General Description

Acropora, the crown jewel of the SPS world, stands out as the genus with the most species in the reef aquarist scene. Known for its striking appearance, Acropora corals exhibit deep purple bases with vibrant yellow tips, creating a gorgeous color contrast that captivates any observer.

Demands and Hardiness (Setup)

Acropora, being highly sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry, demand meticulous care and a well-established aquarium environment. These corals necessitate high water flow, intense lighting, and a stable aquatic ecosystem. Considered one of the most challenging corals to maintain, Acropora thrives best in tanks that have been set up for at least one year, posing a significant challenge even for experienced hobbyists.

Lighting

Characterized by their high light requirements, Acropora benefit from being under high-output fluorescent bulbs such as T5. For optimal growth and coloration, more intense lighting sources like metal halide are recommended, although a longer acclimation period may be necessary. Acropora are known to undergo color shifts based on the lighting provided, with some parts changing entirely under varying tank conditions.

Water Flow

Thriving in strong water movement, Acropora corals flourish in environments with vigorous water flow. This strong flow aids in removing detritus and preventing sediment buildup around the coral, replicating their natural habitat conditions and promoting overall health.

Feeding

While Acropora primarily rely on their zooxanthellae for sustenance, direct feeding can be beneficial. Liquid and powdery foods rich in Phytoplankton and Zooplankton particles are suitable for these corals. Feeding a mixture of small-sized meaty rotifer-based foods with additives like vitamins and highly unsaturated fatty acids can ensure the coral's nutritional needs are met.

Propagation

Notably, Acropora species have been extensively propagated in captivity, making them excellent candidates for aquaculture. The genus shows promise for sustainable harvest practices, contributing to conservation efforts in reef ecosystems.

Localization & Habitat

Found in the Indo-Pacific region, Acropora species inhabit the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the renowned Great Barrier Reef. These corals thrive in the warm waters of these regions, showcasing their vibrant colors and diverse forms in their natural habitat.
