Care DescriptionAcropora are the crown jewel of the SPS world.  No other genus has the sheer number of species as Acropora and when reef aquarists talk about the requirements to keep an SPS system, they are talking specifically about the care requirements of Acropora.  Having said that, Acropora are one of the most difficult corals to keep.  They are highly sensitive to changes in water chemistry and require the most in terms of flow and light.  Many experienced hobbyists have struggled keeping Acropora long term, but that is part of the attraction to this coral.  Lastly, Acropora benefit greatly from a well established aquarium, preferably one that has been set up at least for 1 year. General Description

Acropora, the crown jewel of the SPS world, is a genus known for its vast species diversity. Reef aquarists often refer to Acropora when discussing the care requirements for an SPS system. These corals are highly sought after but notoriously challenging to keep due to their sensitivity to water chemistry changes.

Demands and Hardiness

Acropora demands meticulous care, requiring optimal water flow and intense lighting levels. Experienced hobbyists often struggle to maintain Acropora long term, adding to the allure of these corals. Ideally, they thrive in well-established aquariums, preferably ones set up for a minimum of one year.

Lighting

Acropora thrives under high lighting conditions. While they can be sustained under high-output fluorescent bulbs, they benefit from more intense sources like metal halide lights. Coloration in Acropora is heavily influenced by lighting, with some hues changing drastically based on tank conditions.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is crucial for Acropora. Adequate flow helps these corals thrive by simulating their natural habitat conditions, aiding in nutrient uptake and waste removal within the colony.

Feeding

Although primarily reliant on their zooxanthellae for nutrition, Acropora can benefit from direct feeding. Offering small, meaty, vitamin-enriched foods like rotifers and HUFA supplements can supplement their diet and support their overall health.

Propagation

Acropora species have been widely propagated in captivity, making them suitable for aquaculture practices. With ongoing efforts, sustainable harvesting of Acropora colonies can potentially be achieved, contributing to conservation efforts.

Localization & Habitat

Acropora corals are prevalent in the Indo-Pacific region, including locations like Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat showcases the stunning diversity and beauty that these corals bring to reef ecosystems.
