General Description
The Bali Maricultured Acropora nobilis, also known as Antler Coral, is a branching coral that resembles the antlers of a deer. This species exhibits fast growth rates and can adapt well to various lighting conditions. Acropora nobilis can be cultured and propagated from living fragments or broken pieces under ideal conditions.
Demands and Hardiness
Acropora nobilis thrives in moderately high light levels and strong intermittent water currents within the aquarium. Supplemental calcium, strontium, and other trace elements are necessary for its continued health. The coral can be placed securely in rockwork within the reef tank, benefiting from at least 3 watts per gallon provided by power compacts, VHO, T-5, or metal halide lighting systems. Weekly feeding with micro-plankton or filter feeding invertebrate food is recommended for optimal health.
Lighting
High lighting, such as metal halides, is beneficial for Acropora nobilis. However, the coral may require a longer acclimation period to intense lighting. Coloration of the coral is influenced by the provided lighting, with the potential for dramatic color changes depending on tank conditions.
Water Flow
Strong water movement is essential for the health of Acropora nobilis. The coral thrives in environments with strong water flow patterns that mimic its natural habitat.
Feeding
Acropora nobilis primarily relies on its zooxanthellae for nutrition but also benefits from direct feeding. Feeding a mixture of meaty rotifer-based foods with vitamin additives and highly unsaturated fatty acids is ideal. Food should be small enough for the polyps to fully ingest, and feeding can be done using the cloudy supernate of thawed frozen food sprayed onto the coral colonies.
Propagation
Acropora nobilis is a suitable candidate for aquaculture and has been successfully propagated in captivity. With continuous efforts, it is possible to achieve sustainable harvesting practices for this species.
Localization & Habitat
Acropora nobilis is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. These corals are typically found in shallow waters within the reef ecosystems of these regions.
