General Description

The Branched Montipora Coral, also known as Velvet Branch or Velvet Finger Coral, is a small polyp stony (SPS) coral that exhibits branching growth and comes in a variety of colors. This fast-growing species showcases a fuzzy appearance when its expanded polyps are out, with smooth growth tips enhancing its overall visual appeal.

Demands and Hardiness

The Branched Montipora Coral is a relatively hardy coral that thrives in mature reef aquariums with moderate care requirements. It flourishes under medium to high lighting and moderate water movement. To maintain optimal health, supplementation of calcium, strontium, and other trace elements in the water is necessary. This peaceful coral can coexist with similar corals in reef aquariums.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting levels are essential for the Branched Montipora Coral's well-being. It can be kept under high output fluorescent bulbs (T5) and may benefit from more intense lighting like metal halide (MH). The coral's coloration is likely to change based on the provided lighting, and acclimation may be required for intense lighting sources.

Water Flow

The Branched Montipora Coral thrives in moderate water flow conditions, but strong water movement is recommended for its optimal growth and health within the aquarium setup.

Feeding

While the Branched Montipora Coral derives most of its nutrition through photosynthesis, it can also benefit from direct feeding. Offering a mix of meaty rotifer-based foods with vitamin additives and highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) can serve as a nutritious supplement. Feeding practices include using a turkey baster to spray small-sized food particles on the coral colonies.

Propagation

The Branched Montipora Coral belongs to the Acroporidae family and is specifically identified as Montipora digitata. In the wild, this coral species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, including locations such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Ideal placement within the aquarium is in the middle to top sections, complemented by its peaceful temperament in reef setups.
