Care DescriptionBlastomussa are an interesting stony coral because from afar they resemble mushroom corallimorphs. They are a relatively easy coral to care for with modest requirements for both flow and light. In fact, we have found they tend to do best in low light conditions. They are also easy to feed and later propagate making them a great choice for reef aquarists looking to try some of the more exotic large polyp stony corals. General Description

Blastomussa corals are intriguing stony corals that bear a resemblance to mushroom corallimorphs when viewed from a distance. They are relatively easy to care for, with moderate demands for water flow and lighting. Their appearance features glowing neon green centers encircled by deep pink skirts, adding a splash of color to reef tanks.

Demands and Hardiness

Blastomussa corals have modest requirements for flow and lighting, thriving best under low light conditions. They can tolerate moderate water movement, showing adaptability to various flow strengths. Feeding is crucial for the long-term success of these corals, with a diet consisting of Mysis, krill, and medium to large-sized pellets. They are known to expand better and exhibit more vibrant colors under subdued lighting conditions.

Lighting

Blastomussa corals prefer very dim light, excelling under low light settings. Excessive exposure to bright lights can cause issues such as inflation of polyps or the development of bubbles within the coral's tissue. For reef enthusiasts with tanks featuring modest lighting, Blastomussa corals are an ideal choice due to their preference for subdued lighting conditions.

Water Flow

Moderate water movement is recommended for Blastomussa corals, as they show no particular preference for the type of flow they receive. They can thrive in both low and strong flow reef aquariums without significant variations in health, displaying resilience to different flow strengths.

Feeding

Feeding Blastomussa corals a mix of meaty foods like krill or Mysis shrimp is essential for their well-being. If phytoplankton is unavailable, finely ground meaty foods can be offered to the corals in a paste-like consistency. Proper feeding regimen contributes significantly to the overall health and longevity of Blastomussa corals.

Propagation

Blastomussa corals have been successfully fragmented for propagation purposes, making them an excellent candidate for aquaculture efforts. Their ability to propagate through fragmentation adds to their appeal as a sustainable option for reef aquarists.

Localization & Habitat

Indigenous to the Indo-Pacific region, Blastomussa corals can be found in various islands, including Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. While many specimens originate from Australia, some of the most striking rare color variations are sourced from Indonesia, showcasing the diversity and distribution of Blastomussa species in their natural habitats.
