Care Description | Caulastrea are commonly referred to as either Candy Cane Corals or Trumpet Corals. They are a fast growing LPS Coral and can quickly form a large colony through fission where each polyp grows an additional mouth and then separates into two polyps. They are considered one of the more hardy corals making them beginner friendly. Please see below for more care tips for Candy Canes. |

General Description
Caulastrea, also known as Candy Cane Corals or Trumpet Corals, are fast-growing LPS Corals that can rapidly form large colonies through fission, where each polyp grows an additional mouth and then separates into two polyps. They are considered one of the hardier coral species, making them ideal for beginners.
Demands and Hardiness (Setup)
Candy Cane Corals prefer moderate to low lighting and maintain consistent coloration regardless of the type of lighting provided. They thrive in water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.023-1.026, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. Moderate water movement is recommended to bring them food and remove film and mucus without overwhelming them.
Lighting
Caulastrea do not require intense lighting; medium to low lighting is advisable to prevent overexposure. They maintain their vibrant coloration without the need for strong lighting conditions.
Water Flow
Moderate water movement is ideal for Candy Cane Corals. They benefit from sufficient flow to bring them food and keep their surfaces clean. However, it is crucial not to subject them to excessive water flow that could harm their delicate structures.
Feeding
These corals can be fed a variety of meaty foods such as Mysis and krill. Candy Canes will extend feeding tentacles when they detect food in the water, making it easy to spot feed them. Offering a mix of medium to large-sized pellets ensures their nutritional needs are met.
Propagation
Caulastrea, including the Neon Green Candy Cane variety, are excellent candidates for aquaculture and have been extensively propagated in captivity. They multiply efficiently by forming a peanut shape and dividing into two heads. With sustainable harvesting practices, it is feasible to cultivate these corals successfully.
Localization & Habitat
Caulastrea or Candy Cane Corals are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region and the Great Barrier Reef's diverse ecosystems. Thriving in a variety of marine environments, these corals contribute to the biodiversity and beauty of reef ecosystems.
