Care Description | Caulastrea are commonly referred to as either Candy Cane Corals or Trumpet Corals. They are a fast growing LPS Coral and can quickly form a large colony through fission where each polyp grows an additional mouth and then separates into two polyps. They are considered one of the more hardy corals making them beginner friendly. Please see below for more care tips for Candy Canes. |

General Description
The Teal Caulastrea, a type of LPS coral also known as Candy Cane Coral or Trumpet Coral, is popular for its blue-tinted body with a teal center. It exhibits fast growth and can form large colonies through fission where each polyp grows an additional mouth and separates into two polyps.
Demands and Hardiness
Candy Canes are considered hardy corals, making them suitable for beginners. They can thrive in moderate to low lighting conditions and benefit from moderate water flow, requiring enough movement to bring food and remove film and mucus without being overly blasted.
Lighting
Candy Cane Corals do not demand intense lighting; medium to low levels are preferable to prevent overexposure. Interestingly, these corals maintain consistent coloration, regardless of the type of lighting provided.
Water Flow
Moderate water flow is recommended for Candy Cane Corals. They appreciate sufficient flow to bring them food and eliminate unwanted substances, but care should be taken not to subject them to excessive flow.
Feeding
These corals consume Mysis, Krill, and other medium to large pellets, with a size range between 5mm to 50mm. While they can be fed a mix of meaty foods like mysis or krill, they also extend feeding tentacles when they detect food in the water.
Propagation
Caulastrea corals have been extensively propagated in captivity, with their branching structure allowing them to quickly multiply by forming a peanut shape and separating into two heads. This genus shows promise for aquaculture, suggesting a potential for sustainable harvests in the future.
Localization & Habitat
Caulastrea, or Candy Cane Corals, can be found in various locations across the Indo-Pacific and the Great Barrier Reef, thriving in suitable conditions that mimic their natural habitat.
