General Description

Blue Clove Polyps, a small variety of soft coral, boast a vibrant blue/purple coloration and soft feathery polyps with orange or green highlights. Resembling a mix of Xenia and a Pipe Organ, these polyps have a base forming a tube from which the stalk extends. Known for rapid growth, they can cover large areas of rock or sand, making them difficult to remove.

Demands and Hardiness

Thriving under a variety of lighting conditions, Blue Clove Polyps do well with moderate lighting. They require moderate to high water flow to prevent detritus buildup around their base. Feeding exclusively on liquid and powdery foods, these corals target Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in the 20um-1mm particle range. They heavily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae and may also feed on similarly sized microfauna in the water column.

Lighting

Blue Clove Polyps do well under a wide range of lighting conditions, but it is recommended to start with medium lighting for optimal growth and health.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is ideal for Blue Clove Polyps as it helps prevent detritus accumulation around their base, ensuring a healthy environment for these corals.

Feeding

Blue Clove Polyps feed on liquid and powdery foods, targeting the smallest of prey such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in the 20um to 1mm particle range. They also utilize the products of their zooxanthellae and may feed on similarly sized microfauna present in the water column.

Propagation

Blue Clove Polyps have been extensively propagated in captivity and are considered excellent candidates for aquaculture. Sustainable harvesting practices can potentially be achieved over time with this genus.

Localization & Habitat

Found in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically on islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, Blue Clove Polyps are known to thrive in these warm water environments with stable conditions including a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.023-1.026.
