General Description
Clove Polyps, specifically the Green Tip variety, are fast-growing soft corals characterized by their soft feathery polyps with neon green highlights. Resembling a mix of Xenia and a Pipe Organ coral, they feature a tube-like base from which the stalk extends, adding to their unique appearance.
Demands and Hardiness
Green Tip Clove polyps require liquid and powdery foods like Phytoplankton and Zooplankton for nourishment, with a preference for tiny particles ranging from 20um to 1mm. They heavily depend on their zooxanthellae for sustenance while also consuming phytoplankton and similar-sized microfauna in the water column. To thrive, these corals do well under moderate lighting conditions with a versatile ability to adapt to various lighting setups.
Lighting
Clavularia corals, including the Green Tip Clove polyps, flourish under a wide range of lighting conditions, making them suitable for reef tanks with medium to moderate lighting levels as a starting point for optimal growth.
Water Flow
Moderate to strong water movement is recommended for Green Tip Clove polyps as it helps prevent detritus accumulation at their base. By maintaining moderate to high water flow within the aquarium, potential debris buildup can be minimized, ensuring the health and longevity of these corals.
Feeding
These coral species have a specific dietary requirement for tiny particles and organisms, primarily relying on zooxanthellae products while actively feeding on phytoplankton and microfauna of similar sizes present in the water column.
Propagation
Green Tip Clove polyps, belonging to the Clavularia genus, have been successfully propagated in captivity, making them a viable candidate for aquaculture efforts. With proper cultivation techniques, achieving a sustainable harvest of these corals is a realistic possibility for enthusiasts and conservationists.
Localization & Habitat
The Green Tip Clove polyps are typically found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly on islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They thrive in the warm waters of these areas, showcasing their vibrant colors and delicate structures in their natural habitat.
