Care DescriptionHammer corals are an iconic large polyp stony coral (LPS) that has been a staple in the hobby for generations. They are found all throughout the Pacific reefs and come in a variety of colors and growth forms. Hammer corals sometimes grow in a wall formation while other hammers grow in a branching formation. Either variety makes an excellent show piece coral for a reef aquarium however the branching varieties tend to grow more quickly. Please see below for additional care tips for hammer corals.

General Description

Hammer corals, belonging to the Euphyllia genus, are large polyp stony corals that are popular in the aquarium hobby due to their varied colors and growth forms. They can be found in the Pacific reefs, with some growing in a wall formation while others in a branching structure, the latter being faster-growing and providing a vibrant display in reef tanks.

Demands and Hardiness

Hammer corals, though visually striking, are not demanding in terms of lighting requirements. They can thrive under normal output fluorescents but may exhibit more vibrant colors when placed under stronger lighting. Moderate to strong water flow is recommended for these corals, as they benefit from swaying in the current both aesthetically and health-wise.

Lighting

These corals, including Hammers, Torches, and Frogspawn, do not require intense lighting. While they can do well under subdued lighting, stronger light can enhance their coloration, especially in the case of some varieties with rounded tips that develop more color under higher light.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is beneficial for hammer corals, as it mimics their natural habitat conditions and promotes overall health. The sway of the corals in the current adds to the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium.

Feeding

Hammer corals, like other LPS corals, primarily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition. However, they can also benefit from direct feeding. While they do not aggressively feed compared to some other LPS corals, offering Mysis Shrimp, small critters, and appropriately sized pellets (6 to 13mm) can support their nutritional needs.

Propagation

Hammer corals have been successfully propagated in captivity and show potential for aquaculture. Branching varieties are particularly suitable for propagation efforts due to their faster growth compared to wall varieties. Commercial aquaculture efforts are hindered by the relatively slow growth rate of hammer corals, but sustainable harvests may be achievable with time.

Localization & Habitat

Hammer corals are commonly found in the tropical waters of the Pacific, with populations harvested from various regions such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their prevalence in these areas contributes to their availability in the aquarium trade.
