Care DescriptionGorgonians are often associated with the vision of graceful sea fans on the floor of the Caribbean. While many are fan-like in appearance, Gorgonians are a highly diverse Order that range from encrusting species resembling Xenia to rope-like species that grow in a single long strand. Care must be taken when shopping for Gorgonians because many of the spectacularly colored specimens are non-photosynthetic and require specialized husbandry. Please see below for additional care tips for sea fans.

General Description

Gorgonians, a diverse Order of corals, encompass a wide range of species varying from fan-like structures to rope-like formations. They are commonly associated with the elegant sea fans found in the Caribbean, with some species resembling Xenia in their encrusting appearance while others grow as long strands.

Demands and Hardiness (Setup)

When caring for Gorgonians, it is crucial to note that many vividly colored specimens are non-photosynthetic, necessitating specialized husbandry techniques for their survival. These corals require meticulous attention during selection and setup due to their specific care requirements. Non-photosynthetic Gorgonians demand constant filter feeding and are significantly more challenging to maintain than their photosynthetic counterparts.

Lighting

Gorgonians benefit from intense lighting to enhance coloration and overall health, especially the photosynthetic Caribbean sea fans that inhabit shallow waters. Optimal lighting options include Metal Halide, powerful T5's, or LEDs. In contrast, non-photosynthetic sea fans, often originating from the Pacific, have heightened care needs and rely solely on filter feeding for sustenance, posing a challenge even for experienced hobbyists.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is essential for Gorgonians, with the best displays observed in setups utilizing wave boxes or controlled powerheads that simulate a back-and-forth surge. Recommended flow patterns can be achieved with devices like Tunze Waveboxes, fostering an environment conducive to the thriving of Caribbean sea fans and other Gorgonian species.

Feeding

Gorgonians primarily rely on products from their zooxanthellae; however, they also feed on phytoplankton and similarly sized microfauna present in the water column. Liquid and powdery foods containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton (ranging from 20um to 1mm particles) are suitable for these corals. Dry phytoplankton-based foods designed for filter feeders in reef environments also serve as excellent nutrition sources for Gorgonians.

Propagation

The Giant Split Pore Sea Fan, as part of the Gorgonian family, has been extensively propagated in captivity, making it a favorable candidate for aquaculture. With sustainable harvest potential in the long run, propagating Gorgonians is relatively straightforward. However, attaching them to rocks post-cutting can present challenges, as these corals tend to shed their skin to maintain cleanliness.

Localization & Habitat

Sea fans, including the Giant Split Pore Sea Fan, can be found across various coral reefs, with the featured Gorgonian species specifically originating from the Caribbean region. Their natural habitat provides insights into the care requirements essential for replicating their native environment in aquarium settings.
