Care DescriptionGorgonians are often associated with the vision of graceful sea fans on the floor of the Caribbean. While many are fan-like in appearance, Gorgonians are a highly diverse Order that range from encrusting species resembling Xenia to rope-like species that grow in a single long strand. Care must be taken when shopping for Gorgonians because many of the spectacularly colored specimens are non-photosynthetic and require specialized husbandry. General Description

Gorgonians, part of the Gorgonian sea fan family, encompass a wide range of species, from fan-like to rope-like in appearance, found primarily in coral reefs. One example is Plexaura Flexuosa, also known as the Purple Candelabra Sea Fan, characterized by thick purple branches and small polyps.

Demands and Hardiness (Set-up)

Gorgonians necessitate specialized care as many vividly colored specimens are non-photosynthetic, relying on filter feeding. Maintaining a balance of liquid and powdery foods like phytoplankton and zooplankton for these corals with tiny diets is crucial. While photosynthetic varieties favor intense lighting, non-photosynthetic species require meticulous feeding protocols for survival, challenging even for experienced hobbyists.

Lighting

Gorgonians, like the Caribbean sea fans, thrive under high-intensity lighting due to their photosynthetic nature while residing in shallow waters. Metal Halide fixtures, powerful T5s, or LEDs effectively support their health and vibrant coloration. In contrast, non-photosynthetic sea fans, predominantly from the Pacific, demand continuous filter feeding, substantially elevating care requirements.

Water Flow

Optimal care for Gorgonians necessitates strong water flow patterns, ideally simulated by wave boxes or controlled powerheads to mimic back-and-forth surges. Maintaining vigorous water movement, such as with Tunze Waveboxes, enhances the visual appeal of Gorgonians and provides a healthy environment for these reef inhabitants.

Feeding

Gorgonians heavily rely on zooxanthellae products for sustenance but also feed on phytoplankton and small microfauna present in the water column. Dry phytoplankton-based foods designed for filter-feeding reef inhabitants offer a convenient feeding option for Gorgonians, ensuring a well-rounded diet.

Propagation

With extensive propagation efforts in captivity, Gorgonians, including the Purple Candelabra Sea Fan, exhibit promise for aquaculture endeavors, potentially enabling sustainable harvest practices over time. However, the process of affixing these corals to rocks post-cutting can pose challenges due to their tendency to shed skin during attachment.

Localization & Habitat

Sea fans, including Caribbean variants like the Purple Candelabra, are prevalent across various coral reef ecosystems. The Caribbean region, in particular, serves as a habitat for diverse Gorgonian species, showcasing the beauty and diversity of these marine organisms.
