General Description
The Purple Gorgonia Coral, scientifically known as Pseudopterogorgia sp., is a captivating aquacultured coral propagated at Coral Farm & Aquatic Life Facility. Characterized by bumpy, purple vertical branches and tan-colored expanded polyps during the daytime, this gorgonian adds a unique tree-like structure to reef aquariums.
Demands and Hardiness
Hardier than many of its counterparts, the Purple Gorgonia Coral requires moderate lighting for photosynthesis. To anchor its base, underwater epoxy and a piece of live rock are commonly used in the aquarium setup. It is a peaceful coral but necessitates ample space away from neighboring corals or anemones.
Lighting
Moderate lighting is essential for the Purple Gorgonia Coral to support its photosynthetic needs and overall health.
Water Flow
This coral thrives in aquariums with strong water flow to simulate its natural habitat. Consistent or intermittent water flow is crucial to inhibit algae and cyanobacteria growth.
Feeding
The Purple Gorgonia Coral should be fed a few times a week with appropriate filter-feeding foods such as live or frozen baby brine shrimp, MarineSnow, and PhytoPlan to ensure its nutritional requirements are met.
Propagation
Propagation of the Purple Gorgonia Coral involves providing it with adequate lighting, water flow, and a balanced diet to support its growth and well-being.
Localization & Habitat
In its natural habitat, the Purple Gorgonia Coral can be found in shallow waters with moderate to strong currents, where it filters zooplankton from the water for nutrition. Its successful localization in an aquarium setting requires mimicking these conditions through careful attention to lighting, water flow, and feeding practices.
