Care Description | Horn Corals of the Genus Hydnophora are a relatively hardy small polyp stony coral (SPS). They have a very powerful sting and we highly recommend giving it plenty of space. If a colony comes in contact with another SPS, it is very likely that the Hydnophora is going to win and kill off what it touches. Hydnophora have small mouths called hydnophores but has the ability to capture medium-sized food particles. This SPS feeds more aggressively than most and will happily consume small pieces of shrimp and other frozen foods. Please see below for additional care tips for Hydnophora. |

General Description
The Gold Tip Hydnophora, a member of the Hydnophora genus, is a relatively hardy small polyp stony coral (SPS) known for its powerful sting and territorial nature. It boasts a teal base with striking golden tips, adding beauty to any reef tank.
Demands and Hardiness
For optimal growth and health, provide the Gold Tip Hydnophora with ample space as it can outcompete and potentially harm other SPS corals it comes in contact with. This coral has small mouths called hydnophores and is capable of capturing medium-sized food particles, feeding aggressively on small pieces of shrimp and other frozen foods.
Lighting
To enhance coloration and overall well-being, high-intensity lighting is recommended for the Gold Tip Hydnophora. Metal Halide lighting or a large bank of high-output fluorescent or full-spectrum LED lights are advised. While this coral can survive under moderate lighting conditions, its colors may appear less vibrant.
Water Flow
The Gold Tip Hydnophora thrives in environments with strong water movement, necessitating adequate flow within the aquarium for optimal health and growth.
Feeding
Feeding the Gold Tip Hydnophora a diet comprising Zooplankton, Mysis, and powdered or pellet food ranging from 0.1mm to approximately 13mm in size is recommended. This SPS coral has the ability to capture medium-sized food particles and exhibits more aggressive feeding behavior compared to other corals.
Propagation
With extensive captive propagation efforts, the Gold Tip Hydnophora is deemed an excellent candidate for aquaculture. Sustainable harvesting practices may lead to successful propagation and cultivation of this coral species.
Localization & Habitat
Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, specifically the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, the Gold Tip Hydnophora thrives in the warm waters of these areas. Maintaining water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a specific gravity of 1.023-1.026, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is ideal for the health and well-being of this coral species.
