General Description

Leptastrea, a member of the Faviidae family, is classified as an LPS coral, despite its small polyp size, showcasing dome-shaped growth patterns and a variety of color morphs. The Spit Fire Leptastrea, in particular, features a purple/blue base with bright golden orange centers and purple and blue tentacles on its polyps.

Demands and Hardiness

Leptastrea requires moderate to high lighting conditions for optimal growth, though they are quite adaptable, maintaining consistent coloration irrespective of lighting intensity. They prefer moderate to strong water flow, typically thriving in areas with high water movement within the reef ecosystem.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting levels are recommended for Leptastrea, with bright lighting yielding the best results. While some color variation may occur, this coral species will not drastically alter its color palette based on differing lighting levels.

Water Flow

Leptastrea thrives in moderate to high water flow environments, benefitting from strong currents reminiscent of their natural habitat in high-flow regions of the reef.

Feeding

Leptastrea primarily feed on the smallest particles, such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, within the liquid and powdery food range. They heavily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition and may benefit from supplementary phytoplankton and other small morsels to ensure a well-rounded diet.

Propagation

Propagation of Leptastrea has been accomplished through successful fragmentation techniques, though the process often incurs a lengthy recovery period for the coral to fully establish and grow.

Localization & Habitat

Leptastrea is commonly found in Australia, including regions like the Great Barrier Reef, thriving in diverse marine habitats where water conditions typically fall within specific ranges: a pH of 8.1-8.4, KH of 8-12, salinity of 1.023-1.026, and temperatures between 22.2-25.6°C.
