Care DescriptionLeptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. Please see below for additional care tips for Leptoseris.

General Description

Leptoseris, commonly known as wrinkle coral, gained popularity with the introduction of vibrant orange color morphs that captivated hobbyists with their intense fluorescence and metallic sheen under actinic lighting. They are a visually striking coral species that add a dazzling aspect to reef aquariums.

Demands and Hardiness

Leptoseris have small mouths and primarily feed on tiny particles of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, making feeding a challenging task. They thrive in low lighting conditions and are typically found in shaded areas of the reef, such as under overhangs and lower reef slopes. They are adaptable to different lighting systems, with a preference for blue lighting. While they can withstand varying light levels, color changes may occur as an adaptive response.

Lighting

Leptoseris do well in low light environments and are suited for placement in shady parts of the reef. They showcase their fluorescence best under actinic lighting, particularly LED lights. Keeping them under blue lighting is often preferred by enthusiasts to enhance their aesthetic appeal.

Water Flow

Maintaining a low to moderate water flow is recommended for Leptoseris in reef aquariums. Excessive flow can stress the coral and hinder its full extension. Lower flow conditions provide better opportunities for feeding and support the overall health of the coral.

Feeding

Leptoseris require feeding with liquid and powdery foods due to their small mouth structure. However, they are challenging to feed, and successful feeding attempts are limited. Their diet consists of tiny particles, such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, falling within the range of 20um to 1mm.

Propagation

Leptoseris is considered a suitable candidate for aquaculture due to its quick healing response to cutting and productive growth pattern. Their ability to rapidly regenerate makes them ideal for propagation efforts within the aquarium hobby.

Localization & Habitat

The Blood Orange Leptoseris species is native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically found in locations such as Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. They are commonly situated in coastal waters along the Pacific, favoring environments with appropriate lighting and water flow conditions.
