Care DescriptionLeptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. Please see below for additional care tips for Leptoseris.

General Description

Leptoseris, commonly known as wrinkle coral, gained popularity due to bright orange color morphs with intense fluorescence. Their metallic appearance under actinic lighting adds to their dazzle, making them a sought-after coral in the hobby.

Demands and Hardiness

Leptoseris have small mouths, feeding on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, requiring liquid and powdery foods. Despite being challenging to feed due to their small mouth size, they are known to adapt well to different lighting systems but change colors accordingly. They are suggested for low-light areas, as they prefer shady regions like under overhangs and lower reef slopes.

Lighting

Leptoseris thrive in shady spots on the reef and adapt to various lighting systems, though they do alter their coloration. They fluoresce beautifully under actinic lighting, particularly LED, making them a visually stunning addition to a reef tank.

Water Flow

Maintaining Leptoseris in low to moderate water flow areas is recommended to prevent stress and ensure full extension. Higher flow rates can impact the species negatively, hindering feeding opportunities and overall health.

Feeding

Leptoseris are challenging to feed due to their small mouths, primarily feeding on tiny particles. Liquid and powdery foods containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in the range of 20um-1mm are suitable for their dietary needs.

Propagation

Leptoseris is considered a suitable candidate for aquaculture due to its quick healing from cuts and productive growth pattern. The genus displays high productivity and is conducive to propagation efforts.

Localization & Habitat

The Golden Leptoseris species is typically found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in regions such as Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat includes lower reef slopes and under overhangs, reflecting their preference for shaded areas.
