| Care Description | Leptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. General Description
Leptoseris, also known as wrinkle corals, gained popularity in the hobby due to their dazzling appearance, particularly bright orange color morphs that exhibit intense fluorescence. Under actinic lighting, they display a metallic sheen, making them visually striking.
Demands and Hardiness
Leptoseris, such as the sought-after Jack-o-Lantern variety with a bright orange body and vibrant green eyes, require liquid and powdery foods like Phytoplankton and Zooplankton due to their small mouths that cannot consume large particles. Feeding Leptoseris can prove challenging, with success rates typically low.
Lighting
Thriving in shady reef areas like under overhangs and lower slopes, Leptoseris generally prefer low lighting conditions. They can adapt to different lighting systems, adjusting colors accordingly, but tend to fluoresce attractively under actinic LED lighting, making it a preferred choice for many keepers.
Water Flow
Leptoseris is best placed in areas with low to moderate water flow within the reef aquarium. Excessive flow may stress the coral and hinder full extension, while lower flow settings create better feeding opportunities and overall well-being for the coral.
Feeding
Leptoseris primarily feed on tiny particles like Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, necessitating a diet of liquid and powdery foods. Due to their small mouths, successful feeding can be a challenge, requiring careful attention to ensure adequate nourishment for this coral species.
Propagation
Leptoseris is an excellent candidate for aquaculture due to its quick healing from cutting and growth pattern conducive to high productivity. This genus's rapid growth and regenerative abilities make it a valuable addition to coral propagation efforts.
