Care Description | Leptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. Please see below for additional care tips for Leptoseris. |

General Description
Leptoseris, also known as wrinkle coral, gained popularity in the hobby due to their stunning bright orange color morphs that exhibit intense fluorescence and almost metallic appearance under actinic lighting. The Lava Flow Leptoseris variety features a lime green and blue base with vibrant multi-colored eyes that shift in color as the coral grows.
Demands and Hardiness
Leptoseris are challenging to feed as they have small mouths that can only consume liquid and powdery foods such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in 20um-1mm particles. They prefer low lighting conditions but can adapt to different lighting systems, with a preference for blue lighting. They thrive in shady areas under overhangs and lower reef slopes.
Lighting
Leptoseris thrive in low lighting environments, such as under overhangs and lower reef slopes. While they are adaptable to various lighting systems, they change colors to compensate. The corals fluoresce beautifully under actinic lighting, especially LEDs, enhancing their visual appeal.
Water Flow
Maintaining Leptoseris in low to moderate water flow areas of the reef aquarium is recommended. Excessive flow can stress the coral, hindering its full extension. Lower flow conditions create better feeding opportunities and support the well-being of the coral.
Feeding
Feeding Leptoseris can be challenging due to their small mouths, which can only consume small particles. Liquid and powdery foods are suitable for them, with a preference for Phytoplankton and Zooplankton. Despite efforts, feeding attempts with Leptoseris have been mostly unsuccessful in many cases.
Propagation
Leptoseris is a promising candidate for aquaculture due to its rapid healing from cutting and high productivity in growth. The coral's growth pattern supports efficient propagation efforts, making it suitable for aquaculture practices.
Localization & Habitat
These corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically in locations like Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit areas under overhangs and lower reef slopes, preferring sheltered and shaded environments for optimal growth and health.
