| Care Description | Leptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. General Description
Leptoseris, commonly known as wrinkle coral, gained popularity in the hobby due to their stunning bright orange color morphs that exhibit intense fluorescence. These corals have a metallic appearance under actinic lighting and are highly sought after for their dazzling beauty. The Pink Flamingo Leptoseris, a slow-growing variant with vivid bright pink coloration, is particularly coveted in the hobby.
Demands and Hardiness (Setup)
Leptoseris are challenging to feed as they have small mouths that can only consume liquid and powdery foods containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton particles ranging from 20um to 1mm. They thrive in shady areas of the reef, typically under overhangs and lower reef slopes, preferring low lighting conditions. While adaptable to different lighting systems, they may change colors under varying lighting but often fluoresce brightly under actinic, especially LED lighting.
Lighting
Leptoseris do well in low lighting environments, although they can adapt to different lighting setups. They tend to showcase vibrant fluorescence under actinic lighting, such as LED lights, making them visually captivating additions to reef tanks.
Water Flow
Maintaining a low to moderate water flow is recommended for Leptoseris. Excessive flow can stress the coral, preventing it from fully extending. Lower flow conditions also facilitate feeding opportunities and ensure the coral's well-being in the aquarium setting.
Feeding
Feeding Leptoseris can be challenging due to their small mouths. Liquid and powdery foods containing small particles of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton are suitable for their diet. Careful attention is needed to ensure successful feeding attempts as these corals are not adept at consuming large food particles.
Propagation
Leptoseris is a suitable candidate for aquaculture due to its rapid healing from cutting and high productivity in terms of growth. The coral's growth pattern facilitates easy propagation, making it a favorable choice for aquarists looking to cultivate coral colonies in a controlled environment.
