| Care Description | Leptoseris are commonly known as a wrinkle coral but almost no one in the hobby refers to this coral by its common name. Leptoseris were made popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs came onto the scene and blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because in addition to their bright coloration, they almost take on a metallic appearance. General Description
Leptoseris, also known as wrinkle coral, gained popularity for their bright orange color morphs that exhibit intense fluorescence and a metallic appearance under actinic lighting. This particular species is a mix of metallic gold and yellow, extending from the mouth to the edge of the colony. They are native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef.
Demands and Hardiness
Leptoseris are challenging to feed due to their small mouths that can only consume liquid and powdery foods, such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton. They require a stable environment with a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, pH of 8.1-8.4, and salinity between 1.023-1.026. The ideal carbonate hardness (KH) for Leptoseris is 8-12.
Lighting
These corals thrive in shady areas of the reef, typically under overhangs and lower reef slopes. While adaptable to various lighting systems, they change colors to compensate. Leptoseris fluoresce beautifully under actinic lighting, particularly LED lights, making them suitable for blue lighting preferences.
Water Flow
Leptoseris prefer low to moderate water flow in the aquarium to prevent stress and ensure full extension. Excessive flow can negatively impact their health and feeding ability. Lower flow areas provide better opportunities for feeding and overall well-being of the coral.
Feeding
Leptoseris feed on small particles and struggle to ingest larger food items. Liquid and powdery foods rich in Phytoplankton and Zooplankton are suitable for their diet. Despite being challenging to feed, these corals can thrive with proper feeding strategies in place.
Propagation
Leptoseris are excellent candidates for aquaculture due to their quick healing from cutting and productive growth patterns. Their efficiency in recovering from fragmentation makes them ideal for propagation efforts and sustainable coral cultivation.
