Care DescriptionOn this site, these corals are lumped together in a single category because they can be difficult to tell apart. In some cases, the differences between coral types are more pronounced for example, Lithophyllon for a long time was considered a chalice coral so clearly someone thought it looked different enough to be sorted into a completely separate category of LPS. Please see below for additional care tips for Lithophyllon.

General Description:
The Blue Eye Lithophyllon Plate Chalice is a stunning coral under the family Lithophyllon, featuring a striking purple/blue base with captivating sky blue eyes. When exposed to blue lighting, this coral displays a vibrant green rim, enhancing its visual appeal.

Demands and Hardiness:
This coral species falls under the moderate lighting category, requiring around 100 PAR for optimal coloration and health. Although they can tolerate more intense lighting, extremely high PAR levels exceeding 400 are not recommended as they may cause fading of colors. Blue Eye Lithophyllon Plate Chalices exhibit remarkable fluorescence, particularly enhanced under actinic LED lighting. These corals thrive best in stable home reef aquariums with slightly reduced light intensity during the summer months.

Lighting:
Moderate lighting of approximately 100 PAR is suggested for Blue Eye Lithophyllon Plate Chalices to maintain their vibrant colors and overall well-being. While they can endure higher light levels, excessively intense lighting may lead to color fading, varying across different chalice coral species.

Water Flow:
Blue Eye Lithophyllon Plate Chalices prefer moderate to strong water flow, although they can withstand fairly strong currents. Providing moderate water movement within the aquarium is recommended to promote their growth and health.

Feeding:
Although primarily photosynthetic, Lithophyllon corals are excellent feeders and benefit greatly from spot feeding with large meaty foods such as Mysis, Krill, and medium to large-sized pellets. Care should be taken to ensure that food chunks are small enough for the coral to ingest easily to prevent any feeding issues.

Propagation:
Propagation of Blue Eye Lithophyllon Plate Chalices has been successful through fragmenting. Unlike most Fungia corals, Lithophyllon corals quickly regain their shape post-fragmentation, making them ideal candidates for long-term propagation efforts.

Localization & Habitat:
Plate chalices, including the Blue Eye Lithophyllon variation, are typically found around the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including areas like Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. The majority of these corals available are sourced from Australia, where they naturally thrive in reef environments with suitable water conditions.
