General Description

The Encrusting Horn Coral, scientifically known as Hydnophora exesa, is a species of SPS coral that goes by the aliases Knob, Velvet Horn, or Branch Coral. Its predominant coloration is green with darker green polyps, although variations in cream color with neon green polyps exist. This coral exhibits encrusting growth patterns, gradually spreading over adjacent rockwork, and may develop horn-like branches that extend into the water column. The ability of Hydnophora sp. corals to inflate their tissue grants them a fuzzy appearance.

Demands and Hardiness

The Encrusting Horn Coral thrives under moderate to strong lighting and benefits from a moderate water flow within its habitat. This species showcases relative hardiness in established reef aquariums but can display aggression towards neighboring corals. To prevent harm from its sweeper tentacles, ample space must be provided between this coral and other species. Additionally, maintaining calcium, strontium, and various trace elements in the water is essential for its sustained well-being.

Lighting

This SPS coral species necessitates moderate lighting conditions for optimal growth and health.

Water Flow

Moderate water flow levels are ideal for the Encrusting Horn Coral to thrive within an aquarium setting.

Feeding

Unlike many other SPS corals, Hydnophora exesa can consume relatively large meaty items outside of its skeleton. Supplement its diet with marine-origin zooplankton, brine or mysis shrimp, and chopped meaty items to ensure proper nourishment.

Propagation

The Encrusting Horn Coral potentially reproduces through fragmentation and asexual budding, a common method among various coral species.

Localization & Habitat

Found in coral reefs and shallow waters, the Encrusting Horn Coral typically anchors itself on rocky substrates, where it can spread and extend its distinctive horn-like branches. Its habitat includes regions with moderate water flow and adequate lighting conditions, contributing to its encrusting growth pattern and overall well-being.
