General Description
The Hydnophora Horn Coral, also known as the Knob, Velvet Horn, or Branch Coral, is a Small Polyp Stony (SPS) coral characterized by its branching cream or bright fluorescent green color and short blunt polyps. Despite its similarity to Acropora Coral, they are distantly related, and the Hydnophora genus is recognized for its tuberous skeletal base. This coral is labeled as very aggressive, capable of outcompeting and killing nearby corals, necessitating ample space between specimens.
Demands and Hardiness
Considered a moderate care coral, the Hydnophora Horn Coral requires specific conditions for optimal health. It thrives in reef aquariums with high light levels and medium water movement. Additionally, supplementing the water with calcium, strontium, and other trace elements is essential for sustaining its well-being. In terms of feeding, this coral is known to consume micro-plankton and filter-feeding invertebrate foods if provided.
Lighting
For best coloration and overall health, intensive lighting is recommended for Hydnophora corals. Metal Halide lighting or a substantial array of high-output fluorescent or full-spectrum LED lights are suitable options. While the coral can survive under less intense lighting, its coloration may be less vibrant.
Water Flow
Hydnophora corals thrive in environments with strong water movement. Adequate water flow aids in nutrient distribution and waste removal, contributing to the coral's overall health and vitality.
Feeding
This coral species feeds on zooplankton, Mysis shrimp, and various powdered or pellet foods within a size range of 0.1mm to around 13mm. With small hydnophores, this SPS coral can capture medium-sized food particles, demonstrating more aggressive feeding behavior compared to other corals. Offering small pieces of shrimp and other frozen foods can help sustain its nutritional needs.
Propagation
The Hydnophora genus has been extensively propagated in captivity, making it a promising candidate for aquaculture. With proper techniques and care, a sustainable harvest of Hydnophora corals can be achieved over time.
Localization & Habitat
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Hydnophora corals can be found on various islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their habitat typically includes shallow, well-lit waters with strong water movement, reflecting their preference for high light and water flow conditions.
