Care Description | Montipora are one of the most diverse SPS corals. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors and have been a staple in SPS dominated aquariums as well as mixed reef tanks. As for care, they can be sensitive to changes in tank parameters as well as demanding of both high flow and high light for peak health and coloration. Please see below for more care tips for Montipora. |

General Description
Montipora corals are known for their diversity in shapes and colors, making them a popular choice for SPS-dominated aquariums and mixed reef tanks. The Contraband Grafted Montipora digitata, a new strain, displays a delightful blend of green and red colors that spread throughout the coral, with individual polyps showcasing a grafted orange and green color blend.
Demands and Hardiness
Montipora corals are sensitive to changes in tank parameters and require high flow and intense lighting for optimal health and vibrant coloration. They thrive in aquariums with moderate to strong water movement, as high flow helps remove detritus and deliver essential nutrients to their polyps.
Lighting
High levels of lighting are crucial for Montipora corals. To achieve the best coloration and overall health, consider using Metal Halide lighting, a large bank of high-output fluorescent lights, or LEDs. Inadequate lighting can cause Montipora colors to fade, and like other SPS corals, Montipora may undergo significant color changes depending on the type of light received.
Water Flow
Moderate to high water movement is recommended for Montipora corals. Mimicking their natural habitat, providing strong water flow in the aquarium helps maintain the coral's health by sweeping away debris and supplying necessary nutrients to the polyps.
Feeding
Montipora corals primarily rely on their symbiotic zooxanthellae for nutrition, but they can also feed on phytoplankton and similarly sized microfauna in the water column. While they do not require frequent feeding, a light dusting of rotifers or phytoplankton can benefit their overall health.
Propagation
Montipora corals, including the Contraband Grafted Montipora digitata, have been successfully propagated in captivity and are considered excellent candidates for aquaculture. With extensive propagation efforts, it is feasible to achieve sustainable harvesting of Montipora corals over time.
Localization & Habitat
Montipora corals are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically around islands like Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their wide distribution in these regions showcases their adaptability to various marine environments in the wild.
