Care DescriptionMontipora are one of the most diverse SPS corals. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors and have been a staple in SPS dominated aquariums as well as mixed reef tanks. As for care, they can be sensitive to changes in tank parameters as well as demanding of both high flow and high light for peak health and coloration. Please see below for more care tips for Montipora.

General Description

Montipora corals are known for their diversity in shapes and colors, making them popular additions to SPS dominated aquariums and mixed reef tanks. This Grafted Montipora is a result of hybridizing two color morphs of Montipora capricornis, with marbling intensifying as the coral grows.

Demands and Hardiness

Montipora corals are sensitive to changes in tank parameters and require high flow and intense lighting for optimal health and coloration. They thrive in moderate to strong water movement, with high water flow helping to clear detritus and deliver essential nutrients to their polyps.

Lighting

High-intensity lighting, such as Metal Halide, high output fluorescent, or LED lights, is recommended for Montipora corals. Providing proper lighting is crucial for maintaining vibrant colors, as different light sources can cause dramatic color changes. Inadequate lighting can lead to color fading in Montipora corals.

Water Flow

Montipora corals benefit from moderate to high water movement. Maintaining a high flow in aquariums helps in detritus removal and nutrient delivery to the polyps. Reef hobbyists have had success keeping Montipora in high flow tanks, similar to other SPS corals.

Feeding

Montipora corals primarily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition but can also feed on phytoplankton and microfauna in the water column. Suitable foods include liquid and powdery options containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton particles ranging from 20um to 1mm. Occasional feeding with rotifers or phytoplankton dusting can benefit their diet.

Propagation

Montipora corals, including this Grafted Montipora, have been extensively propagated in captivity and are suitable candidates for aquaculture. With ongoing efforts, achieving sustainable harvests of Montipora corals through propagation is a realistic goal.

Localization & Habitat

Montipora corals are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, including locations like Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit a wide distribution of reefs in these areas, showcasing their adaptability to various marine environments.
