| Care Description | Montipora are one of the most diverse SPS corals. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors and have been a staple in SPS dominated aquariums as well as mixed reef tanks. General Description
Montipora corals are known for their diversity in shapes and colors, making them a popular choice for SPS dominated aquariums and mixed reef tanks. The Kung Pao Montipora, in particular, stands out with its bright orange and yellow base, light blue/green polyps, and pink growth rim.
Demands and Hardiness
Montipora corals are sensitive to changes in tank parameters and demand high flow and intense lighting for optimal health and coloration. They thrive in environments with moderate to strong water movement, benefitting from high flow to remove detritus and bring essential nutrients to their polyps.
Lighting
Montipora corals thrive in high-intensity lighting conditions. To maintain vibrant colors and overall health, it is recommended to use Metal Halide lighting, high output fluorescent lights, or LEDs. Changes in lighting can cause dramatic color shifts in Montipora, similar to other SPS corals like Acropora.
Water Flow
Moderate to high water movement is crucial for Montipora corals. Keeping them in high flow aquariums helps in preventing detritus buildup on the coral, ensuring a cleaner environment, and providing necessary nutrients to the polyps.
Feeding
Montipora corals primarily rely on zooxanthellae for nutrition but can also benefit from phytoplankton and microfauna in the water column.
