Care DescriptionMontipora are one of the most diverse SPS corals. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors and have been a staple in SPS dominated aquariums as well as mixed reef tanks. As for care, they can be sensitive to changes in tank parameters as well as demanding of both high flow and high light for peak health and coloration. Please see below for more care tips for Montipora.

General Description

Montipora corals are known for their diversity in shapes and colors, making them a popular choice for reef tanks. The Red Plating Montipora, possibly a M. capricornis, forms a plating shape that extends outward from the aquascape, potentially shading corals underneath.

Demands and Hardiness

Montipora corals can be sensitive to changes in tank parameters and require high flow and intense lighting for optimal health and coloration. They thrive in high flow aquariums, benefiting from moderate to strong water movement to sweep away detritus and bring essential nutrients to their polyps.

Lighting

Montipora corals, like the Red Plating Montipora, thrive in intense lighting conditions. Metal Halide lighting, high-output fluorescents, or LEDs are recommended for the best coloration and overall health. Insufficient lighting can lead to color fading, and different lighting types can cause dramatic color changes.

Water Flow

Moderate to high water flow is ideal for Montipora corals. Keeping them in high flow aquariums is common practice among reef hobbyists, as it helps remove detritus and deliver vital nutrients to their polyps. In the water column, Montipora primarily feeds on phytoplankton and small microfauna.

Feeding

Montipora corals heavily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition but may also feed on phytoplankton and similarly sized microfauna. While they do not require frequent feeding, a light dusting of rotifers or phytoplankton can benefit their health.

Propagation

Montipora corals have been extensively propagated in captivity, making them excellent candidates for aquaculture. With sustainable harvesting efforts, it is feasible to achieve a consistent supply of these corals for aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Montipora corals are widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found around islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat provides insights into their care requirements for recreating optimal conditions in aquarium settings.
