General Description
The Pink Peony Pocillopora Coral, scientifically classified as Pocillopora damicornis, is a stunning SPS hard coral species that exhibits varying growth forms depending on water flow conditions. With high flow, compact branches are formed, while low flow encourages the development of thin, open branches. This particular variety showcases a beautiful pink coloration, adding a vibrant touch to reef aquariums.
Demands and Hardiness
Pocillopora Corals are moderately demanding in terms of care requirements and thrive in aquarium setups that emulate their natural habitat. They are known to be resilient and adaptable to a wide range of lighting and water flow conditions, making them suitable for intermediate to experienced hobbyists.
Lighting
For optimal coloration and growth, Pocillopora Corals benefit from moderate to high lighting. It is recommended to position them accordingly based on the type of lighting system in use. Under metal halide lighting, keeping the corals in a mid to low position is ideal, while under other lighting types, a mid to high position is more suitable.
Water Flow
Being commonly found in strong surge zones in the wild, Pocillopora Corals thrive in aquariums with strong water movement. This replicates their natural environment and supports their overall health and well-being.
Feeding
Pocillopora Corals primarily feed on the smallest particles, such as phytoplankton and zooplankton. Liquid and powdery foods containing these nutrients are suitable for their diet. Feeding can be done by utilizing a turkey baster to disperse thawed-out frozen food supernate directly onto the coral colonies.
Propagation
This coral species, including Pink Peony Pocillopora, has been successfully propagated in captivity, making them excellent candidates for aquaculture. They can reproduce through a method called polyp bailout, where individual polyps detach from the base skeleton and reattach elsewhere to form new colonies. It is suggested to start with frags to allow them to adjust and grow according to a specific reef setup.
Localization & Habitat
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including islands like Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, Pocillopora Corals are typically found in shallow waters. Their ability to adapt to various reef environments and their contribution to reef building productivity in the wild showcase their significance in marine ecosystems.
