Care DescriptionPorites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.” For some corals, their scientific name tends to stick. Please see below for additional care tips for Porites.

General Description

Porites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.”

Demands and Hardiness

Porites are not well known for their appetite; however, large colonies frequently house Christmas tree worms that are beautiful filter feeders. Regular addition of phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton may be beneficial to both these worms and the coral. They are an excellent candidate for aquaculture due to being easily propagated.

Lighting

Porites are commonly found in very shallow water and enjoy intense lighting. It is recommended to use either Metal Halide lighting or a large bank of high output fluorescent or full-spectrum LEDs. They thrive in about 200-PAR, but shallow water varieties can receive over 1000-PAR.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is recommended for Porites. They are accustomed to heavy flow areas on the reef, making strong water flow beneficial for their growth and overall health.

Feeding

Porites are not particularly recognized for their feeding habits, but they can benefit from the regular addition of phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton. Large colonies often host Christmas tree worms, which are beautiful filter feeders and contribute to the coral's health.

Propagation

Porites have been extensively propagated in captivity due to their hardiness and suitability for aquaculture. This genus is known to respond well to propagation efforts, making it a sustainable option for reef aquarium enthusiasts.

Localization & Habitat

Porites are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically on islands such as Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They thrive in shallow waters with strong lighting and water flow, adapting well to the demanding conditions of their natural habitat.
