Care DescriptionPorites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.” For some corals, their scientific name tends to stick. Please see below for additional care tips for Porites.

General Description

Porites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon in the reef aquarium hobby. They typically grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. The Darth Maul Porites, for example, features a bright hot pink base with contrasting white polyps, making it an encrusting variety of Porites.

Demands and Hardiness

Porites are not well known for their appetite; however, they often host Christmas tree worms, which are beautiful filter feeders. These corals feed on the smallest particles of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton. Therefore, only liquid and powdery foods are suitable. Regular addition of phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton can benefit both the worms and the coral. Strong water movement is recommended for Porites, as they are commonly found in high-flow areas on the reef.

Lighting

Porites are commonly found in very shallow water and thrive in intense lighting conditions. It is advised to use Metal Halide lighting or a large bank of high-output fluorescent or full-spectrum LED lights. Maintaining a PAR level of around 200 is ideal, although shallow water varieties may receive over 1000 PAR.

Water Flow

Porites prefer strong water movement, as they typically grow in areas with heavy flow on the reef. This strong water flow helps replicate their natural habitat conditions and supports their growth and health.

Feeding

Porites feed on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, requiring regular addition of liquid and powdery foods to meet their nutritional needs. While they are not voracious feeders, ensuring a steady supply of small food particles can support their health in captivity.

Propagation

Porites have been extensively propagated in captivity, making them an excellent candidate for aquaculture. This genus has shown success in captive breeding efforts, contributing to the sustainability of their populations in reef aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Porites corals are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, including islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat in these areas influences their care requirements in aquarium settings.
