Care DescriptionPorites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.” For some corals, their scientific name tends to stick. Please see below for additional care tips for Porites.

General Description

The Purple Sand Dollar Porites is a variety of small polyp stony corals (SPS) within the Porites genus, known for its unique growth pattern of finger-like structures emerging from a massive encrusting base. Commonly referred to as "jewel coral," these corals exhibit a range of colors, with the Purple Sand Dollar Porites showcasing a purple/blue base that can vary based on lighting, along with bright pink polyps.

Demands and Hardiness

Porites corals thrive under high lighting conditions, making them ideal for well-lit reef aquarium setups. They require strong water flow, as they are typically found in areas of the reef with heavy water movement. Additionally, Porites are known to feed on the smallest particles, such as Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, making liquid and powdery foods suitable for their diet. While Porites themselves may not exhibit a significant appetite, they often host Christmas tree worms, beautiful filter feeders that benefit from regular additions of phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton.

Lighting

To promote optimal growth and coloration, Porites corals should be provided with intense lighting. Suitable options include Metal Halide lighting or a large bank of high output fluorescent or full-spectrum LED lights. Shallow water varieties of Porites can withstand PAR levels of over 1000, but a range around 200-PAR is commonly maintained in aquarium settings.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is recommended for Porites corals, replicating the natural habitat where they are often found in areas with heavy flow. This strong water flow aids in maintaining the health and vitality of these corals within the aquarium environment.

Feeding

Porites corals primarily feed on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, requiring small particle sizes ranging from 20um to 1mm. Liquid and powdery foods serve as suitable options for feeding Porites corals, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients to thrive.

Propagation

Porites corals have been successfully propagated in captivity, making them an excellent candidate for aquaculture efforts. Their ability to adapt and reproduce under controlled conditions contributes to the sustainability of Porites populations in reef aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

The Purple Sand Dollar Porites is native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically found on islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Thriving in shallow waters with intense lighting and strong water flow, these corals contribute to the vibrant marine ecosystems of their natural habitats.
