Care DescriptionPorites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.” For some corals, their scientific name tends to stick. Please see below for additional care tips for Porites.

General Description

Porites corals are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon in the reef aquarium hobby. They typically exhibit finger-like structures growing from a massive encrusting base and are available in a diverse range of colors. Porites corals are occasionally referred to as "jewel coral" in the hobbyist community.

Demands and Hardiness

Porites corals are not well known for their appetite, although large colonies often house Christmas tree worms, which are beautiful filter feeders. Regular supplementation of phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton can be beneficial for these worms and the coral. These corals prefer strong water movement, thriving in some of the highest flow areas on the reef.

Lighting

Porites corals are commonly found in very shallow waters and thrive under intense lighting conditions. Ideal lighting options include Metal Halide lighting, large banks of high output fluorescents, or full-spectrum LEDs. Maintaining around 200 PAR is advisable, although shallow water Porites species may receive over 1000 PAR.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is recommended for Porites corals, as they are typically found in areas with heavy water flow on the reef. Providing adequate water flow helps promote the health and growth of these corals in aquarium settings.

Feeding

While Porites corals are not known for their significant appetite, supplementing their diet with phytoplankton and smaller zooplankton can benefit both the coral and any associated Christmas tree worms in the colony. Regular feeding can contribute to the overall health and vibrancy of Porites corals.

Propagation

Porites corals have been successfully propagated in captivity and are considered an excellent candidate for aquaculture efforts. Their ability to adapt to artificial environments and reproduce readily makes them valuable additions to reef aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Porites corals are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, including islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They are commonly located in shallow waters with intense lighting and strong water flow, thriving in these demanding environmental conditions in their natural habitats.
