Care DescriptionPorites are a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS) that are somewhat uncommon to the reef aquarium hobby. Most of the time they grow finger-like structures from a massive encrusting base and come in a variety of colors. Porites are rarely known by their common name “jewel coral.” For some corals, their scientific name tends to stick. Please see below for additional care tips for Porites.

General Description

Porites, a Genus of small polyp stony corals (SPS), are uncommon in the reef aquarium hobby, characterized by finger-like structures growing from a massive encrusting base, displaying a variety of colors including a canary yellow shade. They are sometimes referred to as "jewel corals."

Demands and Hardiness

Porites thrive under moderate lighting and flow conditions, with frags showing optimal growth when allowed to encrust before spiring upwards. They are not particularly known for their appetite, although large colonies often support Christmas tree worms, benefiting from regular phytoplankton and zooplankton feedings.

Lighting

Preferring intense lighting, Porites are commonly found in very shallow waters. Metal Halide lighting or a large bank of high output fluorescent or full-spectrum LED lights are recommended, with specimens in shallow waters possibly exposed to over 1000 PAR.

Water Flow

Strong water movement is crucial for Porites, as they are commonly found in areas with heavy flow on the reef. This mimics their natural habitat conditions and supports their growth and health.

Feeding

Porites feed on the smallest particles, primarily Phytoplankton and Zooplankton ranging from 20um to 1mm. Liquid and powdery foods are suitable for feeding these corals, aiding in maintaining their health and supporting associated filter feeders like the Christmas tree worms.

Propagation

Porites species have been extensively propagated in captivity, making them a suitable candidate for aquaculture efforts. This propagation method helps in preserving these corals and reducing the pressure on wild populations.

Localization & Habitat

Found in the Indo-Pacific region, Porites are distributed across islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit shallow waters with unique lighting and strong water flow characteristics, adapting to thrive in such environments.
