Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description

Goniopora corals are known for their vibrant colors and intricately designed tentacles, resembling a bouquet of flowers. They are highly coveted for their aesthetic appeal in reef aquariums, with some species displaying a purple/pink base and bright green tentacles that develop a red center.

Demands and Hardiness

Goniopora corals require special care in aquarium settings, as many species struggle to adapt from their natural habitat to captivity. However, certain species have shown promise in surviving and thriving in controlled environments. They require precise feeding strategies, proper lighting, moderate to strong water flow, and stable water conditions to ensure their well-being.

Lighting

Goniopora corals can adapt to a wide range of lighting intensities. While they can adjust to various light levels, it is advisable to acclimate them gradually, especially if transitioning to brighter lighting conditions in the aquarium. Providing moderate lighting initially may help the coral adjust more effectively.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is recommended for Goniopora corals. They are sensitive to physical contact but do not seem to be bothered by strong water flow. Ensuring adequate circulation within the tank helps maintain the health of these corals by preventing debris buildup and facilitating nutrient exchange.

Feeding

Goniopora corals predominantly rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition. Supplementing their diet with phytoplankton can be beneficial, as it boosts the population of rotifers that serve as a food source for the corals. Liquid and powdery foods containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton particles are suitable for feeding Goniopora. In the absence of phytoplankton, finely ground meaty foods with a paste-like consistency can be offered.

Propagation

Propagation of Goniopora corals has been achieved through successful fragmentation techniques. By carefully fragmenting the corals, hobbyists can create new colonies and expand their populations within the aquarium.

Localization & Habitat

Goniopora corals are commonly found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including locations such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. They thrive in clear tropical waters with moderate to strong currents, attaching themselves to rocky substrates or sandy areas where they can capture microscopic prey for sustenance.
