Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description

Goniopora corals are known for their intense colors and resemble flower bouquets with their tentacles, earning them the nickname "flower pot corals." Despite their beauty, they have proven challenging to keep in aquariums, with some species struggling to adapt. However, certain varieties, like the Harlequin Goniopora, exhibit better hardiness in captivity.

Demands and Hardiness

The Harlequin Goniopora, a photosynthetic variant, stands out for its mint green color and delicate tentacles, showcasing increased resilience compared to other Goniopora species. They require liquid and powdery foods rich in Phytoplankton and Zooplankton for sustenance, benefitting from phytoplankton additions to promote a thriving rotifer population as supplementary nutrition.

Lighting

Goniopora corals can adapt to a broad range of lighting intensities, from low to high. However, it is advisable to acclimate them gradually, especially if transitioning from moderate to intense lighting setups.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is ideal for Goniopora corals, as they thrive in such conditions without being overly disrupted. While they are sensitive to physical contact, the coral seems to tolerate stronger flow rates without issues.

Feeding

Goniopora corals heavily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition. In addition, supplementing their diet with phytoplankton can aid in enhancing their overall health. If phytoplankton is unavailable, finely ground meaty foods can serve as an alternative, ideally in a paste-like consistency for easier consumption.

Propagation

Propagation of Goniopora corals has been successful through fragmentation techniques, allowing for the cultivation of new colonies from existing ones.

Localization & Habitat

Goniopora corals are found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including locations like Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat consists of warm waters with specific parameters like a pH range of 8.1-8.4, salinity between 1.023-1.026, and temperatures ranging from 22.2-25.6°C.
