Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description:

Goniopora corals, commonly known as flower pot corals, are characterized by their intensely colored tentacles resembling a bouquet of flowers, making them highly sought after in reef aquariums. They are considered the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals due to their vibrant appearance.

Demands and Hardiness:

Goniopora corals have historically posed challenges for aquarium hobbyists, with many species struggling to adapt from the wild to captivity. However, certain species, like the Hellscape Micro Goniopora, have shown promise in thriving in controlled environments. They require specific feeding habits, relying on phytoplankton and rotifers for nutrition.

Lighting:

These corals can adapt to a wide range of lighting intensities, from low to high. It is recommended to acclimate Goniopora to moderate lighting if they are initially placed under very bright lights in the aquarium.

Water Flow:

Goniopora corals benefit from moderate to strong water movement in the tank. While they are sensitive to physical contact, they can tolerate strong flow without adverse effects.

Feeding:

Goniopora primarily feed on the products of their zooxanthellae, with a preference for liquid and powdery foods containing phytoplankton and zooplankton particles. If phytoplankton is unavailable, finely ground meaty foods can be offered to these corals.

Propagation:

Propagation of Goniopora corals, including the Hellscape Micro Goniopora, has been successfully achieved through fragmentation, allowing for the reproduction and growth of these species in controlled settings.

Localization & Habitat:

Goniopora corals are native to the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat consists of shallow reef environments with appropriate lighting and water conditions.
