Care Description | Goniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora. |

General Description
Goniopora, known as Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals, are characterized by their vibrant colors and tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic appeal makes them highly desirable among reef aquarium enthusiasts.
Demands and Hardiness
Goniopora have been challenging to maintain in aquariums, with many species failing to thrive in captivity. However, certain species show promise for better survival rates. They require liquid and powdery foods rich in Phytoplankton and Zooplankton for sustenance.
Lighting
Goniopora can adapt to a wide range of lighting intensities, but it is recommended to acclimate them gradually if exposed to high-intensity lighting in home aquariums.
Water Flow
Moderate to strong water movement is preferred for Goniopora, as they are sensitive to physical contact but can tolerate strong flow without issues.
Feeding
These corals heavily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition. Supplementing their diet with phytoplankton can boost the population of rotifers, which serve as a food source for Goniopora. In the absence of phytoplankton, finely ground meaty foods can be offered.
Propagation
Goniopora can be successfully propagated through fragmentation, indicating a potential for sustainable cultivation in aquariums.
Localization & Habitat
Goniopora are found in the Indo-Pacific region, including islands like Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, thriving in diverse marine habitats.
