General Description

The Yellow Porites Coral, also known as the Jeweled Finger, is a small polyp stony (SPS) coral that displays a distinctive yellow coloration. Its polyps create a fuzzy appearance when expanded, and this coral is commonly found in branching forms, although it can vary in shapes and colors.

Demands and Hardiness

To thrive, the Yellow Porites Coral requires high lighting conditions provided by T-5 fluorescent, LED, or metal halide fixtures. Maintaining high water quality with proper levels of pH, alkalinity, calcium, and minimal phosphate and nitrate is crucial. Additionally, strong, intermittent water flow within the aquarium through devices like powerheads or wavemakers is beneficial.

Lighting

High lighting, such as that from T-5 fluorescent, powerful LED, or metal halide fixtures, is essential for the Yellow Porites Coral's health and coloration.

Water Flow

The Yellow Porites Coral thrives in strong, intermittent water flow, which can be achieved using powerheads, wavemakers, or water circulation pumps in the aquarium.

Feeding

While mainly relying on photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae for nutrition, the Yellow Porites Coral benefits from supplemental feedings like micro-plankton, brine shrimp, and other filter-feeding invertebrate foods. Regular additions of calcium, magnesium, strontium, and trace elements are also recommended for its health.

Propagation

Propagation of Yellow Porites Coral can be achieved through fragmentation, where a healthy fragment is separated and allowed to grow into a new colony under suitable aquarium conditions.

Localization & Habitat

Yellow Porites Coral is commonly found in reef habitats with clear, tropical waters, attached to solid surfaces or substrates. Its peaceful temperament and short tentacles allow for placement among other peaceful corals in reef aquariums.
