Care Description | Goniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora. |

General Description
Goniopora corals are known for their vibrant colors and distinctive tentacle arrangement, earning them the nickname of flower pot corals due to their resemblance to a bouquet of flowers. These corals are highly sought after for their aesthetic appeal, with striking blue and purple bases and polyps in hues of pink, blue, and purple, complemented by bright yellow mouths. When fully expanded, these Goniopora typically measure around 1" in size with a 1/2 base.
Demands and Hardiness
Goniopora corals are considered enigmatic within the reef aquarium hobby, as they present a challenge in terms of care and survival. While they boast intense colors, many species struggle to thrive in captivity. However, certain species show promise for better adaptation to aquarium conditions, offering hope for successful maintenance. These corals require meticulous attention and specific conditions to flourish in a home aquarium.
Lighting
Goniopora corals can adapt to a wide range of lighting intensities, from low to high levels. It is advisable to acclimate these corals gradually to brighter lighting if your tank has particularly intense lights to prevent stress and ensure their well-being.
Water Flow
Maintaining moderate to strong water movement is essential for Goniopora corals. They are sensitive to physical contact but can tolerate strong flow well, benefiting from the nutrient-rich water circulation in their environment.
Feeding
Goniopora corals primarily feed on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, requiring small particle-sized liquid and powdery foods for sustenance. They heavily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition and may benefit from phytoplankton supplements in their diet. If phytoplankton is not available, finely ground meaty foods can be provided, ensuring a paste-like consistency for easy consumption.
Propagation
Successful fragmentation techniques have been employed for the propagation of Goniopora corals, enabling aquarists to reproduce and spread these captivating species within their tanks.
Localization & Habitat
Goniopora corals are found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. In their natural habitat, they thrive in warm waters with specific parameters, such as a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH of 8.1-8.4, a salinity of 1.023-1.026, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
