Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description

Goniopora, belonging to the family Goniopora, are known to be the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. These corals are admired for their intense colors, often resembling a bouquet of flowers, hence the common reference to them as flower pot corals. The Rainbow Gonipora, a unique variety, stands out with its bright purple/pink base and vibrant polyps in shades of orange, pink, red, green, and yellow tips.

Demands and Hardiness (Setup)

Goniopora present a challenge for reef aquarium hobbyists due to their struggle to thrive in captivity. Although certain species have shown improved adaptability, many Goniopora species find it difficult to acclimate. They require meticulous care and specific conditions to flourish. Liquid and powdery foods are crucial for their diet, with the smallest particles of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton being ideal for feeding.

Lighting

Goniopora display versatility in adapting to various lighting intensities. While they can adjust to different light levels, it is recommended to acclimate them gradually, especially if transitioning to brighter lighting in a home aquarium.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is essential for Goniopora. Although sensitive to physical contact, these corals show resilience to strong water flow, which is conducive to their well-being.

Feeding

Goniopora heavily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition. Supplementing their diet with phytoplankton can be beneficial, as it enhances the population of rotifers that serve as a food source. In the absence of phytoplankton, finely ground meaty foods with a paste-like consistency can be administered to meet their dietary needs.

Propagation

Successful fragmentation has been achieved with Goniopora for propagation purposes. This method has been effective in promoting the growth and reproduction of this coral genus.

Localization & Habitat

Goniopora species are found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific region, including Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. These corals thrive in the pristine waters of these tropical locales, showcasing their natural beauty and adaptability to specific habitats.
