Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description

Goniopora corals are known for their vibrant colors and tentacles that resemble a bouquet of flowers, making them aesthetically appealing. However, they have a reputation for being challenging to keep alive in aquariums, though certain species have shown promise in captivity.

Demands and Hardiness

Goniopora corals require liquid and powdery foods, specifically Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, with particles ranging from 20um to 1mm in size. These corals heavily rely on their zooxanthellae for nutrition and may benefit from the addition of phytoplankton to increase the population of rotifers, which serve as a food source for the coral. In the absence of phytoplankton, finely ground meaty foods with a paste-like consistency can be provided.

Lighting

Goniopora corals can thrive in a wide range of lighting intensities, from low to high. However, it is recommended to acclimate them to moderate lighting if they are initially placed under particularly bright lights.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water movement is ideal for Goniopora corals, as they are sensitive to physical contact but can withstand strong flow without issue.

Feeding

Goniopora corals feed on small particles and benefit from phytoplankton supplementation to support their zooxanthellae. Rotifers that feed on phytoplankton serve as a nutritious food source for these corals.

Propagation

Fragmentation has been successful in propagating Goniopora corals, offering a method for their reproduction and cultivation in aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Goniopora corals are found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific, including regions like Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, where they thrive in their natural habitat.
