Care DescriptionGoniopora are possibly the most enigmatic of all Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals. On one hand, Goniopora are some of the most intensely colored corals on the reef. They are commonly referred to as flower pot corals for the appearance of their tentacles that resemble a flower bouquet. This aesthetic also makes them highly desirable. On the other hand, reef aquarium hobbyists have struggled keeping these corals alive for years. Many species of Goniopora never seem to make the transition from the wild to our aquariums. Having said that, there is new found hope in that certain species fare much better in captivity. Please see below for additional care tips for Goniopora.

General Description

Goniopora corals are distinguished by their intense colors, often resembling flower bouquets, earning them the nickname "flower pot corals" and making them highly sought after in reef aquariums. Despite their aesthetic appeal, Goniopora have posed challenges for hobbyists in terms of successful care and longevity in captivity, with some species faring better than others.

Demands and Hardiness

The Sunburst Micro Goniopora is hailed as a hardy and fast-growing variety within the Goniopora family, offering a striking appearance with its bright fluorescent yellow face, red mouth, and pink and red tentacles. These corals are known to be particularly fastidious in terms of care requirements.

Lighting

Goniopora can thrive under a wide range of lighting intensities, from low to high. While they can adapt to different lighting conditions, acclimating them gradually to moderate lighting is recommended, especially when transitioning from particularly bright lights.

Water Flow

Maintaining moderate to strong water movement is crucial for the well-being of Goniopora corals. They are sensitive to physical contact, but robust water flow does not seem to adversely affect them.

Feeding

Goniopora primarily feed on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, necessitating the provision of liquid and powdery foods consisting of tiny particles ranging from 20um to 1mm. Additionally, supplementation with phytoplankton can benefit these corals by bolstering the population of rotifers, which serve as a valuable food source. In the absence of phytoplankton, finely ground meaty foods with a paste-like consistency can be provided.

Propagation

Propagating Goniopora corals has been achieved through successful fragmentation methods, allowing for the reproduction and expansion of this genus within reef aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Goniopora corals are found in the islands of the Indo-Pacific, including regions such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. These natural habitats provide insights into the environmental conditions and factors that support the growth and sustenance of Goniopora species.
