General Description

Psammocora, specifically the Fireworks Psammocora, are small polyp stony corals known for their purple base and neon orange eyes. They present a velvet appearance from afar, revealing intricate individual polyps up close. Fast-growing and resilient, they adapt well to various tank conditions, making them an attractive choice for marine enthusiasts.

Demands and Hardiness (Setup)

Psammocora thrive on liquid and powdery foods, particularly Phytoplankton and Zooplankton in 20um-1mm particle sizes, making them suitable for light feedings like a dusting of rotifers or phytoplankton. Their care requirements are relatively low maintenance, with the potential for growth in aquaculture setups. They are tolerant of fluctuating parameters and can withstand a wide range of water conditions, contributing to their hardiness in captivity.

Lighting

While Psammocora favor ample light, they can adapt to varying lighting intensities. Initially, it is recommended to acclimate them to low to moderate lighting levels to prevent light shock and ensure consistent coloration and growth rates. However, they are versatile in lighting preferences, demonstrating resilience in different light conditions.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong water flow is essential for Psammocora, with high flow environments benefiting their growth and vitality. Similar to other SPS corals, they appreciate and thrive in environments with moderate to high water movement, promoting nutrient uptake and overall health.

Feeding

Psammocora predominantly feed on tiny planktonic organisms, necessitating the provision of appropriate liquid and powdery foods in the tank. Although they do not require excessive feeding efforts, occasional supplementation with rotifers or phytoplankton can enhance their well-being and promote growth.

Propagation

As a genus, Psammocora has been successfully propagated in captivity, making it a promising candidate for aquaculture practices. The potential for sustainable harvests through controlled propagation methods indicates a positive outlook for their conservation and availability in the hobbyist market.

Localization & Habitat

Psammocora are native to the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found around island regions such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat consists of diverse reef ecosystems within these areas, showcasing their adaptability to varying marine environments and highlighting their significance in regional coral diversity.
