General Description
Psammocora, a small polyp stony coral, is often overlooked despite its unique velvet appearance when viewed from afar, revealing individual polyps up close. Known for its fast growth and adaptability to diverse tank conditions, Psammocora is a resilient species that thrives in various settings.
Demands and Hardiness
Psammocora thrives on liquid and powdery foods, primarily feeding on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton with particles ranging from 20um to 1mm in size. While these corals do not require extensive feeding efforts, occasional supplementation with rotifers or phytoplankton can be beneficial. They are considered low to moderate maintenance coral suitable for aquaculture due to their fast-growing nature and tolerance to different environmental conditions.
Lighting
Preferring light, Psammocora can adapt to a broad spectrum of lighting conditions without compromising coloration or growth rate. However, it is advisable to acclimate them to low to medium light initially to prevent shock from intense lighting.
Water Flow
Psammocora thrives in moderate to strong water flow, similar to many other Small Polyp Stony corals, benefiting from elevated water movement typical in high-flow setups. The robust water circulation aids in nutrient dispersal and contributes to the overall health of the coral.
Feeding
Psammocora corals thrive on a diet of liquid and powdered foods, particularly Phytoplankton and Zooplankton. While they do not require frequent feeding, supplementing their diet with a light dusting of rotifers or phytoplankton can enhance their health and growth.
Propagation
Psammocora has been successfully propagated in captivity, making it an excellent candidate for aquaculture. With extensive propagation efforts, it is plausible to achieve sustainable harvesting methods for this coral species.
Localization & Habitat
Psammocora is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting various areas around islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their wide distribution in these locales showcases their adaptability to different marine environments, further highlighting their hardiness as a coral species.
