General Description

Psammocora, part of the Psammocora family, are small polyp stony corals characterized by their bright golden color with small purple mouths. Despite being relatively uncommon, they display a velvet-like appearance from a distance, with individual polyps visible up close. Known for their fast growth rate and adaptability to various tank conditions, Psammocora are underappreciated gems in coral keeping.

Demands and Hardiness

Psammocora thrive in moderate to strong water flow, benefiting from moderate to high water movement in aquariums. They can tolerate a wide range of lighting conditions, preferably kept in low to moderate light initially to prevent shock from intense lighting. Their tolerance to different lighting setups often preserves their consistent coloration and growth rate. These corals can also benefit from occasional feedings with liquid or powdery foods, such as rotifers or phytoplankton, supporting their diet of microscopic organisms like Phytoplankton and Zooplankton.

Lighting

While Psammocora enjoy light, they have been successfully kept in varying lighting conditions without compromising their health and vibrancy. Recommending low to moderate light as a baseline ensures their well-being in the aquarium setting.

Water Flow

Psammocora thrive in moderate to strong water flow conditions, akin to most Small Polyp Stony corals. Providing them with high water movement replicates their natural habitat and enhances their overall health in captivity.

Feeding

Psammocora predominantly feed on Phytoplankton and Zooplankton, requiring small particle-sized liquid and powdery foods for sustenance. Although not excessively demanding, a light dusting of rotifers or phytoplankton can benefit their nutritional intake.

Propagation

This coral genus has been successfully propagated in captivity, making them a suitable candidate for aquaculture. With the potential for sustainable harvesting, Psammocora's propagation efforts contribute to conservation and availability within the hobby.

Localization & Habitat

Psammocora are commonly found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including areas surrounding islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their wide distribution signifies their adaptability to various marine environments in this region.
