General Description
Scolymia, commonly known as Button Corals, are highly sought-after LPS corals that serve as stunning centerpieces in reef tanks. Known for their vibrant array of colors, these corals are a favorite among hobbyists for their beauty and unique appearance.
Demands and Hardiness
Scolymia thrive in reef tank setups with low to moderate lighting conditions and low to medium water flow. It is essential to ensure that water movement is not excessive, as too much flow can hinder the coral's ability to capture food. These corals are known to be hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for reef aquarists of varying experience levels.
Lighting
For optimal growth and health, Scolymia corals require low to moderate lighting levels. Providing the appropriate light intensity will support the coral's photosynthetic processes and overall well-being.
Water Flow
Maintaining low to medium water flow is crucial for the well-being of Scolymia corals. Too much water movement can impede the coral's feeding mechanisms and lead to nutrient deficiencies. It is important to strike a balance in water flow to ensure the coral's health.
Feeding
Scolymia corals primarily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition. Supplementing their diet with meaty foods such as Mysis and krill is beneficial for their overall health. Medium to large-sized pellets and feeds ranging from 5mm to 50mm are suitable food options for these corals.
Propagation
Scolymia corals, including the Ultra Bleeding Apple Scolymia species, are not ideal candidates for aquaculture due to challenges associated with their propagation. As a result, they are mainly sourced from the wild, particularly from regions in the Indo-Pacific and Australia.
Localization & Habitat
Originating from the Indo-Pacific region and Australia, Scolymia corals are typically found in reef environments with diverse marine life. Their natural habitats consist of rocky substrates, where they can settle and display their vibrant colors, adding to the beauty and biodiversity of the coral reefs.
