Care Description | Bird’s Nest Corals are some of the fastest growing SPS corals. They benefit from strong flow however their lighting requirements vary from colony to colony. In our experience, the pink varieties enjoy higher lighting conditions than the others. The yellow bird’s nest actually prefers subdued lighting. Once settled in, these corals take on incredible colors and can be propagated sustainably. Please see below for additional care tips for Seriatopora Bird’s Nest Corals. |

General Description
Bird’s Nest Corals, specifically the Seriatopora genus, are known for their rapid growth and vibrant colors. This particular pink Seriatopora features magenta polyps and exhibits tolerance to varying flow and light conditions.
Demands and Hardiness
Bird’s Nest Corals benefit from strong water flow, especially as they grow larger and need increased flow to reach the polyps at the center of the colony. Their lighting requirements can vary within different colonies of the species. Pink varieties tend to thrive under higher lighting conditions, while the yellow variant prefers subdued lighting. Despite being brittle and prone to breaking during shipping, these corals can be easily re-glued, promoting sustainable propagation.
Lighting
While Bird’s Nest Corals can adapt to a range of lighting intensities, their appearance is influenced by the spectrum and intensity of the light they receive. Corals kept under higher lighting conditions generally exhibit lighter colors, although aesthetics may vary according to personal preference.
Water Flow
Seriatopora Bird’s Nest Corals thrive in strong water movement. As the colony grows, it necessitates increasing flow to ensure adequate access to the polyps located at the center.
Feeding
Bird’s Nest Corals primarily rely on the products of their zooxanthellae for nutrition but can also feed on phytoplankton and similarly sized microfauna in the water column. Suitable food options include liquid and powdery foods containing Phytoplankton and Zooplankton particles ranging from 20um to 1mm.
Propagation
The Seriatopora genus, including Bird’s Nest Corals, has been successfully propagated in captivity, making them ideal candidates for aquaculture. With proper care, sustainable harvesting of these corals can be achieved. When fragments break off, they can be easily reattached to form new colonies, further supporting their propagation efforts.
Localization & Habitat
Bird’s Nest Corals from the Seriatopora genus can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically on islands such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their habitat typically includes warm waters with ideal parameters of pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a temperature between 22.2 to 25.6 degrees Celsius, and a specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.026. The recommended alkalinity for these corals falls between 8-12 dKH.
