General Description

Stylophora, also known as Cat's Paw Coral, is a branching small polyp stony coral (SPS) from the Family Pocilloporidae. They are less commonly seen for sale, making them a unique addition to high light, high flow reef systems. The Purple Stylophora, in particular, is favored for its ease of care and appealing coloration.

Demands and Hardiness

To thrive, Stylophora requires moderate to high flow and lighting levels. Strong water movement is recommended, mimicking the surge zones where they are commonly found in the wild. Proper setup and conditions are crucial for the health and growth of Stylophora colonies.

Lighting

Medium to high lighting is recommended for Stylophora. Intense LED lighting has been observed to bring out their best coloration, enhancing the visual appeal of these corals. Providing adequate light is essential for their overall well-being.

Water Flow

Stylophora thrives in strong water movement. In natural environments, they are exposed to vigorous currents, necessitating ample flow in aquarium settings. Adequate water flow prevents stagnation within the coral colony, ensuring its health and vitality.

Feeding

Stylophora primarily feeds on phytoplankton and zooplankton, requiring small particles ranging from 20um to 1mm. Liquid and powdery foods are suitable for feeding, and it is recommended to observe feeding behavior closely. Using a turkey baster to disperse thawed frozen food can facilitate feeding sessions for Stylophora.

Propagation

Stylophora is actively propagated in captivity and is well-suited for aquaculture. Branching SPS corals like Stylophora exhibit diverse shapes and colors depending on their location on the reef. It is advisable to start with frags and allow them to grow within a specific reef setup to prevent stress and die-off in larger colonies transplanted into new aquariums.

Localization & Habitat

Stylophora is naturally found in the Indo-Pacific region, including islands like Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef. Their preference for strong surge zones in the wild underscores the importance of replicating such conditions in captive environments for their optimal well-being.
